CCTV News:For doctors in intensive care medicine, every day is a contest with death, and every detail is related to life and death. Entering the Department of Critical Care Medicine on the 5th floor of Building 2, Zhongda Hospital affiliated to Southeast University, a leading national clinical key specialty is presented. This achievement is mainly due to Professor Qiu Haibo, a famous domestic expert in critical care medicine, vice president of Zhongda Hospital and director of the Department of Critical Care Medicine.
"Critically ill patients are like wandering on the edge of a cliff, and the Department of Critical Care Medicine is their last hope. It is our responsibility to make every effort to turn patients to safety. " This is a sentence that Qiu Haibo, vice president of Zhongda Hospital affiliated to Southeast University and winner of Bethune Medal, often talks about.

Pioneer of ICU in China
As the leader of critical care medicine in Zhongda Hospital affiliated to Southeast University, Professor Qiu Haibo strives for perfection in medical service, quality technology and scientific research. He often said, no pains, no gains, more learning and one step, can win more chances for patients to be successfully rescued, and can push the discipline construction further.
The growth and strength of the Department of Critical Care Medicine cannot be separated from Qiu Haibo’s painstaking construction and silent dedication. From participating in the preparation of various guidelines for critical care medicine to participating in the formulation of management norms for the construction of critical care medicine as an expert; From compiling professional reading materials for critical care physicians to preparing and organizing qualification training for critical care physicians; From establishing and perfecting the medical quality control system of critical care medicine in China to perfecting the network platform construction of critical care medicine … … Without exception, he devoted a lot of effort, and he was busy with his work almost all year round.
Under his leadership, the Department of Critical Care Medicine of Zhongda Hospital has successively become the key construction discipline of the "135 Project" in Jiangsu Province, the key clinical specialty in Jiangsu Province, the only critical care medical diagnosis and treatment center in Jiangsu Province, the first batch of national key clinical specialties, the Jiangsu Provincial Critical Care Medical Quality Control Center, and the national critical care medical quality control center. Every year, more than 1,000 critically ill patients are rescued and more than 600 patients are consulted. Nowadays, the critical care medicine of Zhongda Hospital affiliated to Southeast University has become the largest comprehensive ICU in East China, and the treatment center for critically ill patients in Jiangsu Province and even the whole country. In 2016, Fudan University won the second best score in the country in the reputation ranking of medical specialties.
Based on Jiangsu and looking at the whole country, it is Professor Qiu Haibo’s unremitting pursuit to benefit more critically ill patients. In recent years, the work of the National Center for Quality Control of Critical Care Medicine has also been promoted step by step: revising the quality control indicators of critical care medicine and standardizing the development of critical care medicine; Through the operation of the severe infection monitoring cooperation network, the quality of critical care medicine in China can be effectively monitored; Gradually promote the management of single disease, making the management of severe medical infection a big step; Take the lead in piloting the skills training and qualification certification of critical care medicine in Jiangsu Province, and promote it to the whole country after achieving results … … On the road of consolidating the discipline foundation, Qiu Haibo has always led the team to move forward steadily step by step.
Strive for perfection.
For intensive care medicine, every day is a contest with death, and every subtle link is related to life and death. Therefore, Professor Qiu Haibo is extremely demanding of himself, students and young doctors, and is meticulous in his research work.
No matter how busy the business is, Professor Qiu Haibo must personally check the original data of each experiment, verify the experimental results and revise the academic papers that students are going to publish. It is said that the team built by Professor Qiu Haibo is an iron rider, and the students trained are elites, because they are all tempered.
In May, 2015, Qiu Haibo suddenly suffered from acute pancreatitis. He called the graduate students who were about to graduate to revise their defense papers while infusion. Although he was weak, his voice was still strong, his eyes were still firm and his requirements were still strict. Before each study, he asked students to fully grasp the international academic trends, repeatedly scrutinize the experimental plan and demonstrate the feasibility of the experiment. He attaches great importance to the combination of scientific research and clinical practice, and thinks that research that is meaningless to clinical practice is like having no soul, so medical and social resources should not be wasted. Being "demanding" for a long time, students naturally realize the benefits.
Professor Qiu Haibo is particularly strict in the treatment of critically ill patients. Every time before making a treatment plan, he strives to have an accurate grasp of the patient’s condition. Any intervention that is not beneficial to the patient is forbidden, and any operation must be completely in accordance with the process, in order to ensure that the implementation of the treatment plan is foolproof.

Defend life and dare not slack off
"I often face patients who may have reached the last moment of my life, which makes me realize more deeply that superb medical skills are the foundation of practicing medicine. The level of doctors determines which step patients can take, so it is very important to be a doctor with the ability to treat diseases. In hospitals, although the proportion of critically ill patients is only a very small part, the requirements for doctors are the highest — — They need to have comprehensive knowledge, quick response and loving feelings. The sense of mission and responsibility has also brought endless motivation. " In Qiu Haibo’s view, it is the responsibility of a doctor in critical care medicine to make every effort to turn patients to safety.
During the earthquake relief in Yushu, a critically ill patient in his thirties developed high fever, shock and renal failure. If he was not rescued in time, his life would be hard to protect. Professor Qiu Haibo personally went into battle to carry out bedside hemofiltration treatment for patients, and the condition of dying patients was alleviated. Unexpectedly, three days later, the patient’s condition deteriorated again. Professor Qiu Haibo immediately organized multidisciplinary expert consultation and emergency rescue, insisted on waiting at the patient’s bedside and adjusted the treatment plan in time. After two weeks, he finally took the patient back from the "death".
Qiu Haibo said with emotion, "The success of each rescue is the greatest praise for our work, and it is also the greatest comfort for all medical staff in our ICU department."
Everyone can always see Qiu Haibo appear in the ward in high spirits early in the morning to check the patient’s condition, but few people know that in order to consult critically ill patients, he often forgets to eat three meals. After going out for consultation, the patient turned the corner. No matter how late, he always came back on the earliest flight, so that the critically ill patients still needed him in the ward. Day after day, year after year, he didn’t live up to the life trust of seriously ill patients, and his hard work turned into silver silk and climbed up the sideburns.
Be a good doctor with temperature
For more than 20 years, Qiu Haibo has always stood up when the people and the country need it. He has participated in the SARS epidemic in 2003, the swine streptococcosis epidemic in Sichuan Province in 2005, the hand-foot-mouth disease epidemic in 2008, the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, the influenza A (H1N1) epidemic in 2009, the Yushu earthquake in 2010, the "8.2" Kunshan explosion accident in 2014 and 2015.
He believes that as a doctor of critical care medicine, in addition to constantly studying and exploring, and innovating critical care technology, he must also consider from the patient’s point of view, find the pain points of patients, treat, comfort and encourage them, and be a doctor with temperature. Clinicians must spend more time in wards and patients. On the one hand, through careful observation and communication, they can understand what stage the patient’s condition is in and give the most suitable treatment plan. On the other hand, they should try their best to encourage the patient and tell him how many difficult times he needs to spend, so that he feels that the doctor is always concerned about him. He always asks himself not only to be a master of technology, but also to have humanistic feelings and become a good doctor with temperature.
In recent years, Professor Qiu Haibo has been awarded the Jiangsu May 1st Labor Medal, Jiangsu May 4th Youth Medal, National Model of Earthquake Relief, National Model of Medical Ethics, National Advanced Individual of Teachers’ Morality, National Outstanding Scientific and Technological Workers, Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions from the Ministry of Health, China Doctor Award, Jiangsu "Bethune Health Worker", Jiangsu’s Advanced Individual of Earthquake Relief in Health System, Jiangsu’s Advanced Individual of Teachers’ Morality, and Jiangsu’s Advanced Individual of Prevention and Treatment of SARS in National Health System and Central Organization Department.
Behind the honor, there are countless sleepless nights, and countless times to stand up and save people from fire and water. Under the leadership of Qiu Haibo, the Department of Critical Care Medicine of Zhongda Hospital has made one new achievement after another. Qiu Haibo said that critical care medicine is always on the road, and the innate sense of mission and responsibility is endless motivation. He will forge ahead with his team, pursue Excellence and innovate again. (Source: Propaganda Department of National Health and Family Planning Commission)
