Interview with Hu Mei | It took 18 years, and this masterpiece was filmed!

Special feature of 1905 film network "I never thought it could be made!"

On the occasion of the release, the director shared the creative journey of the past 18 years with the outside world again and again. Hu Mei has always had a special affection for A Dream of Red Mansions, from the time he read this literary masterpiece at the age of 9 to the time it became a nutrient in his life.

"A Dream of Red Mansions" has gone through a long road of 18 years from planning to shooting to release.

Eighteen years is enough to make the world change dramatically, and it is enough to make this film almost difficult to produce. Under the rolling tide of the times, such as the break of funds and the change of audience’s aesthetic standards, A Dream of Red Mansions encountered too many "accidents". In the "Dialogue" column of the 1905 film network, we asked Hu Mei if she had thought about giving up this project. I didn’t expect to attract her feelings, not to mention giving up. "I never thought this film could be made!" .

As early as 2006, Hu Mei began to plan to film A Dream of Red Mansions. In the past few years, 50 or 60 scripts have been written, and tens of thousands of actors have been interviewed. The film volume has been reduced from three to two, and then the essence has been completely concentrated in 116 minutes.

Hu Mei said that the length of A Dream of Red Mansions has been adjusted many times, and the narrative order of the film has also changed compared with the previous one. The theme revolves around conspiracy and love, which is a version of "A Dream of Red Mansions". With the age of classics getting farther and farther away from contemporary people’s lives, traditional culture gradually disappears. I hope it can draw people’s attention to China’s classical literature.

After the film was finished, Hu Mei felt that his work was finished. As for whether it can really reach the audience, she said that the market is unpredictable. After the film was released, it was left to everyone to evaluate.

01

Many people ask Hu Mei, "Why do you have to shoot this difficult Dream of Red Mansions?"

Hu Mei was only 9 years old when she first read A Dream of Red Mansions. At that time when there was no TV set, reading comic books was one of her few pastimes. Mother has a box of books under the bed, and Hu Mei goes to "peek" when she has nothing to do. Masterpieces such as A Tale of Two Cities and A Dream of Red Mansions broke into her world during that time.

For Hu Mei at that time, Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai were all children of their own age, playing with butterflies and having a little temper. The bits and pieces in the Grand View Garden left a deep impression on her as a girl. Whenever something unpleasant happens, she will immediately turn out this book to read.

In the blink of an eye, when asked by the outside world why she wanted to shoot A Dream of Red Mansions, Hu Mei always remembered those distant memories. "Although it didn’t have a direct effect on making this film, it planted a dream seed." When I grow up, this masterpiece is still around Hu Mei. She regards it as a decompression companion, and every time she reads it, she will have new feelings.

"I think I am really too old. How many changes have taken place in the world now." Hu Mei sighed.

The new era is changing with each passing day. All kinds of entertainment have long been popular, and going to the cinema to watch movies has become a popular way to decompress. As a source of happiness for people anytime and anywhere, short videos strongly affect the aesthetic habits of the audience. Nowadays, people prefer fast-paced and exciting visual communication.

The change of the audience’s viewing habits also drives the film creators to make certain adjustments.

Fifty or sixty manuscripts were written for the script of A Dream of Red Mansions. Originally, three films were planned, but in the end, the whole film was condensed to less than two hours. Hu Mei did a lot of subtraction for the film, and many plots were cut out reluctantly, just to concentrate the essence of the text in as short a time as possible.

When getting closer and closer to filming, Hu Mei also asked himself, why do you want to make A Dream of Red Mansions into a movie? "It is important that A Dream of Red Mansions is a pearl that condenses Chinese culture, and this pearl should be passed on to the younger generation." .

In Hu Mei’s eyes, this film is an innovative "red chamber of youth". She used "a good marriage of gold and jade" instead of "the alliance of wood and stone" as part of the title of the film, which is exactly the reverse technique. Good marriage is wrong and should be criticized. It was the marriage of gold and jade recognized by the feudal family that caused the love tragedy of Bao Daichai. "If you see the end, you will feel that the marriage of gold and jade is very relevant." Hu Mei explained.

02

The youthful "A Dream of Red Mansions" is on the screen, and the public will witness the birth of a group of young actors. Playing Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai respectively, and both stand out from the crowd.

In order to find the actors who fit in with A Dream of Red Mansions, Hu Mei and his team traveled to Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou to interview a large number of new people, hoping to finally find "blank paper" without any performance experience. Hu Mei said frankly that he had never considered using other famous new generation actors to play the leading role.

"A Dream of Red Mansions" was launched in 2018, when Guan Xiaotong was 21 years old. Hu Mei called her a young artist with mature and delicate performances, and considered her to play Lin Daiyu or Xue Baochai. However, because Guan Xiaotong is taller, it is not particularly appropriate to Lin Daiyu described in the original book. Compared with the new couple, Hu Mei thinks the role of "Yuan Chun" is more suitable for her.

"Anyway, listen to the director, just let me participate." Guan Xiaotong is more concerned about joining the film than whether he can play Lin Daiyu. Hu Mei praised the young actor, who can interpret various roles and has the shaping power of one person in thousands of ways.

Bian Cheng, Zhang Miao Yihe, Huang Jia Rong and other new actors all entered the set after long-term training.

The average age of the children from the auditions is only 14. The crew gathered them all together and trained them according to the ratio of 1:3 for each role. During nearly nine months of training, they not only have to learn piano, chess, calligraphy and painting, literature, philosophy and history, manners and postures, but also learn how to perform from breathing methods and learn intangible culture such as traditional Shuang Mianxiu.

"It’s really hard." Hu Mei recalled that when reporting the performance, almost all the people present cried. I didn’t expect the training to change them so much. Bao Dai studied, Bao Chai fluttered butterflies, Dai Yu buried flowers … A group of new actors joined hands to offer a brand-new interpretation of famous scenes.

In addition to the actors, the scenery and costumes in the film all show the characteristics of "the red chamber of youth".

Hu Mei introduced that the crew invited a large number of young designers to create modern aesthetic feeling on the basis of traditional and classical aesthetics, and the original concept map was too illusory and even had avant-garde sci-fi elements. The movie set has been adjusted from the original. As for people’s costumes, from colors and styles to materials, embroidery and wearing methods, they also resonate with young people as much as possible.

03

"When you have a certain social experience, you will find that it seems not enough to just tell the stories around you. Chinese culture is profound and profound, and wisdom has been passed down for thousands of years. As I grow older, I prefer to return to traditional culture more and more." From Yongzheng Dynasty to Confucius, and then to A Dream of Red Mansions, Hu Mei has been exploring the film and television of traditional culture.

The creation of A Dream of Red Mansions has gone through 18 years, during which it encountered numerous difficulties. Some of them were predicted by Hu Mei when he made this film. Such as the difficulty of adaptation. The "accidents" such as the break of funds greatly surprised her.

Looking back on the past days, Hu Mei admitted that he never thought of giving up, and never thought that the film could be made. "I didn’t deliberately have to go for these eighteen years. During these eighteen years, I was also making other films." .

Scripts are written one by one, shots are shot one by one, and everything is done step by step. When Hu Mei thought that the film could not be made for many times, she always had a chance to tell her that it seemed possible. At the moment when the film was finished, she felt that her work had been finished.

Born out of Chinese classics, whether it is reduction and innovation, or compared with its previous works, A Dream of Red Mansions is bound to attract much attention. In the director’s view, every film has its own soul.

Now the film has been put into the market and accepted by the audience. When talking about whether he was worried about the box office, Hu Mei bluntly said that it was useless to worry. Creators are like athletes. It is unpredictable whether they can stand on the podium after the competition is completed.

But she still hopes that this film can be seen by more people, and everyone can continue to imagine the "Red Chamber World".

Highlights of "Scared Sand": The heroic show is tender and the war drama is like "Assembly"

Adapted from a real event, the hero’s tenderness is touching.

The story of "Scared Sand" took place in 1937. Qin Jiwei, the general of our army, led a 300-man team against the enemy’s 7,000-man cavalry, and successfully broke through after defending the city for three days. This film is the first film to expose the hard-fought course of the Red Army’s West Route Army. The soldiers persisted in the struggle when the supply was extremely scarce. When they ran out of bullets, they rushed at the enemy with broadswords, and the final outcome was even more tragic. Except for the hero, all the other characters died heroically.

When heroes also have tenderness, the emotional portrayal of each character in the film is in place. When her sister Gui Fang was about to be captured by the enemy, first hero Qin Jiwei resolutely shot and killed the brave Red Army woman warrior in order to make her sister not be insulted. Gui Fang’s husband, Lao Han, witnessed the moment of his wife’s sacrifice, and was hit hard. First, he was depressed, and then he killed the prisoners to vent his anger without authorization. He also argued with Qin Jiwei about this matter. The feelings that they had suppressed for a long time in the war were released at this moment, which was really touching.

Listen to Wu Xiaobo’s exclusive decryption of Penguin Empire at Dragonfly FM

At the beginning of May, Tencent’s market value broke through the $300 billion mark, becoming the first market value of BAT and the most profitable Internet company in China. In less than a year, Tencent’s market value has increased by more than 70 billion US dollars. It has become the world’s largest social empire alongside Facebook.

Tencent’s QQ, WeChat and other products have almost wiped out all users with social skills in China, and have also shown a strong and almost dominant force in the fields of games, communication and entertainment.

Many people ask why such an 18-year-old company, which started as an instant messenger, is so powerful. What enabled it to get out of the embattled situation a few years ago, quickly transform and grow into "another company"? What did it do right in strategy, management, employment and culture to create Tencent today?

Teacher Wu Xiaobo said "This enterprise is too complicated" when she talked about "How Tencent grew up" on Dragonfly FM. I investigated 100 middle and senior executives of Tencent before and after, and did some research outside. It took a total of six years before and after writing this book. Eighteen years ago, Tencent may have started from a mistake and embarked on a counterfeit road. It has been on the edge for a long time, and now it has gradually grown into a HK$ 2 trillion company, which is still in the process of continuous iteration. "

Although "How Tencent grew up" is only 140 pages, Wu Xiaobo spent five hours on Dragonfly FM telling about this legendary enterprise. This paper deeply analyzes Tencent’s legendary road from the following aspects: why is the complicated relationship between Tencent, China Internet and horse webmasters, who invested in Tencent, the profit dilemma of QQ, Tencent’s battle of ·MSN in 2004, the battle of games in 2008, the battle of 3Q in 2010, and the shift of focus: seven weapons from QQ to WeChat and Ma Huateng. Let every deep user of Tencent products gain insight into its growth logic and better understand the ins and outs of product presentation. Learn more about the overall situation and future trends of Internet in China.

Wu Xiaobo said, "Tencent has a lot of experience to learn from today. It can be said that these ideas and experiences have made Tencent today, and I call him the seven weapons of Ma Huateng".

  First, product minimalism

Tencent pays great attention to details, and it is very light, small and simple. It is said that many employees of Tencent often receive emails from Ma Huateng at one or two o’clock in the evening, saying that the color of a product is wrong and there are half a byte in the byte. Ma Huateng insists on several points in product design: First, don’t force users. Second, don’t harass 99% users for 1% demand. Third, the faint art, point to stop. Fourth, don’t deliberately cater to the younger age.

  Second, the user-driven strategy

In 2004, everyone talked about platform traffic, but Ma Huateng was talking about user experience. The concept that products are driven by product managers has only recently been recognized by everyone. In the past, they were all driven by traffic and mode. Xiaomi’s strategy is a typical product manager logic, which is driven by capital and product managers. Capital, culture and platform basic ability constitute the bottom of the team.

Tencent has a mechanism-the 10/100/1000 rule. The product manager should do 10 user surveys every month, pay attention to 100 user blogs and collect 1000 user experiences, which was a rule set 10 years ago. At the same time, Tencent also has a research institute specializing in user feedback.

Third, the internal horse racing mechanism

All the senior executives in Tencent are playing, and it is very sad to be in Tencent without meritorious military service. Always in constant adjustment, a powerful department becomes a business group, and the departments that can’t be reorganized. Believing in the management mode of the US military, the commando team similar to "operation mekong" engages in blasting, translation, wireless communication and snipers, and everyone has their own expertise to accomplish the common goal. All Tencent’s mobile games are first killed internally, and then tested internally, publicly and experimentally. If you do well, I will give you the traffic.

  Fourth, the trial-and-error iterative strategy

"Small step iteration, trial and error running" is the eight-character formula for the survival of all Internet companies including Tencent. In the user-driven market environment, we should open ourselves up, don’t want to do it all at once, and be brave in trial and error. Trial and error is actually an ability. QQ was very imperfect in the early days, and it was iterated every two weeks, so was WeChat.

  V. Ecological cultivation mode

In 2011, Tencent proposed opening up. After the opening of QQ and WeChat, the two words that Tencent said the most were purification and ecology. The reason why purification is emphasized is the re-imagination of this enterprise organization model, and what to do in the face of uncertainty. It is not another taxi company that subverts the taxi company, but Didi taxi. It’s not another Weibo that subverts Weibo, but WeChat.

All Tencent’s strategies are based on coping strategies in the face of uncertainty. At the end of 2013, Ma Huateng had two very important viewpoints: First, connecting everything. Second, internet plus.

  VI. Capital integration ability

What is Tencent’s openness? One is traffic and the other is capital. Traffic is a resource, and resources can be turned into funds. Tencent is a listed company with a large amount of cash reserves. The first action of Tencent’s opening up was to do Q+, and then set up billions of industrial M&A funds for investment. Participate in the capital market in the form of investment.

Seven, focus on the initial heart of entrepreneurship

Since 1978, the first batch of entrepreneurs in China started their businesses for survival. Entrepreneurs like Lu Guanqiu are township entrepreneurs, with low educational level and powerful destructive power.

The second batch was in 1984, when China began to reform its urban system, such as Liu Chuanzhi, Wang Shi and Zhang Ruimin.

The third group was people in the system who were disappointed with the system after Deng Xiaoping’s talk in South China in 1992. The fourth batch is the wave of Internet entrepreneurs like Ma Yun and Ma Huateng, no longer for food and clothing, but for love. These people are very young. Ma Yun in 1964, Zhang Chaoyang in 1964, Li Yanhong in 1968, Ding Lei and Ma Huateng in 1971, Liu Qiangdong in 1974 and Wang Zhidong in 1966. They are now in their 40 s and 50 s, and they still maintain their initial intention of starting a business.

As the first paid program created by Dragonfly FM and Wu Xiaobo Channel, "How Tencent grew up" exceeded expectations in terms of both the number of listeners and the income. Become the first "explosion" in the paid boutique area. Since then, Jiang Xun, Feng Lun, Liang Hongda, Liang Dong, the complete works of Jin Yong’s martial arts, The Notes of So Many Crimes and other paid content have been launched. Among them, the paid program of Taiwan Province aesthetic master, poet and writer Jiang Xun has been online for one month, with more than 30,000 subscribers and revenue of nearly 2 million yuan.

"A lot of professional content is the biggest advantage of dragonfly FM." According to the person in charge of Dragonfly FM, the platform has included the contents of more than 3,000 radio stations and more than 1,000 university radio stations nationwide, aggregated more than 9 million hours of audio programs, and reached a strategic cooperation with Chinese Online Group, and obtained the right to make the content created by 17K Novel Network and Tangyuan into audio works.

It can be said that 2017 is a great year for content entrepreneurship, and various content platforms such as video, WeChat official account and audio have sprung up, and more and more people are beginning to realize the popularity of audio content payment. A person related to dragonfly FM said, "We hope that users who buy paid content are customers who really have demands for audio content. Buyers will carefully think about whether they really have this demand, and listen carefully after purchasing and gain something. There is no shortage of information in this world. What is lacking is screening. Paid audio will allow users to obtain higher quality content products in a shorter time. "

Taiwan’s popular Jolin Tsai. China News Agency, photo by Hong Shaokui

Taiwan diva Jolin Tsai’s emotional world has attracted much attention, but she has never responded positively to the scandal. Recently, she gave an exclusive interview to Taiwan media and talked about her love life for the first time. Although she did not want to name the identity of her ex-boyfriend and the name of the man’s new love at that time, she was ready to point out her old loves Jay Chou (Jay Chou) and Patty Hou.

Back in February 2005, Jolin Tsai revealed that when "he" and a female live streaming host first had an affair, she immediately checked, "but he told me no." Later, the intimate photos of "hook neck" shopping in Tokyo Daikanyama were published in the newspaper, and the evidence was ironclad. "He still told me that everyone wanted them to take a photo together." Tsai revealed that when the man proposed to her to break up, he still thought "what way can we continue", and she said: "I will still be reluctant."

Jolin Tsai shines brightly on the stage, but the management of relationships has become a "coward", "I just can’t help the big woman, go to takecare (take care of) boys." Therefore, during the relationship, she took the man’s friend as a friend and his life as a life. "After breaking up, I found that I have so few friends!" The tone revealed helplessness.

Jolin Tsai revealed that today’s relationship with "him" is like a gentleman’s friend, and many numerologists say that the two will get back together. She said flatly, "It’s pretty funny, it’s impossible." As for the heroine in the incident, Jolin Tsai recalled that they also met in the workplace, and their eyes met, "She is very beautiful, and he should like her."

In an interview, Jolin Tsai shared the deceased love affair with the reporter undefended, but never mentioned the names of "those two". She admitted that she had been very unforgiving to "him" and "her", but after a long time, she let go, but couldn’t help but sigh: "The last one to know is the most terrifying thing."

As for her new love affair, Jolin Tsai said that she had dated three or four people before, but they did not continue because they were not suitable. In response to Peng Yuyan, who has spread rumors about the affair, she insists: "I am currently a friend, and I don’t have that (love) feeling (feeling) yet." She looks forward to a firm and unmotivated love. Jolin Tsai said that when I meet a boy I like again, I will definitely take the initiative to chase after him, and even use hugs to make the other party feel her love. In the sweet time between the two, I will put on a looming but cute style of clothing to create romance. (Zhong He)
